Born in Mumbai, India in a Sindhi business community. He soon moved with his family to Iran in the Middle East where he finished his studies. He later returned to Mumbai and began investing in the Indian markets when he was 16.
Chabria uses a long term value based approach to investing. His investment style is modeled on the principles of investing adopted by Warren Buffett, Benjamin Graham and Philip Arthur Fisher. He advocates investing in times of temporary trouble and depression. He invested in Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces when the stock price had crashed during the 26th November 2008 terrorist attacks. The stock price tripled within a years time.
His teaching focus on making investing, finance, and money simpler and are based on the principles of what he calls "The Happionaire Way". He often talks about investing in knowledge and says that the main reason people are wealthy, is because they have invested in knowledge. He says that the reason people are not financially independent is because they are afraid of conventional finance, and since childhood most people haven't been taught about money. According to him, the knowledge of finance is a basic survival skill and everybody needs to be "financially literate". He says that without Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, is impossible to get.
Chabria is critical of leverage and unnecessary debt, and says that a simple way of living is very important to create wealth. Most of his teachings are based on his personal experiences with investing in stock markets, businesses, real estate, commodities, and virtual real estate.
Yogesh stresses that wealth without peace of mind, fun, and happiness is useless.
The book helps simplify the concepts of investing in the Indian stock markets. Chabria starts out by telling how he started investing in Indian stocks with only Rs. 750 at the age of sixteen and went on to become a professional investor. The book talks about various concepts such as Sensex, Nifty, Stock Markets, Real Estate and how people can invest for the long term based on knowledge. Yogesh also shares stories about billionaires like Dhirubhai Ambani, Laxmi Mittal, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Warren Buffett and others in order to help motivate readers to think about investing an wealth. This book has continued to stay on the Crossword bestseller list ever since its publication (in April 2008).
This is the Hindi translation for Invest The Happionaire Way. It has been published by CNBC Awaaz and Network18 Bestsellers.
This book talks about how people can benefit from the global economic Crash and use it as an opportunity. Yogesh starts out by telling how he made huge losses while investing and how he recovered those losses. The book explains the history of the current crash, sub-prime crisis and who is responsible for the global financial meltdown. Chabria then shares methods on how the crash can be used as an opportunity to create new wealth. The book is filled with anecdotes and stories on how throughout history people have used times of crisis to their advantage. A large part of the book is written in a simple and conversational style to make it appealing to a large audience who might not conventionally read books on investing and money. Yogesh has used Bollywood actors like ShahRukh Khan to help explain finance. The book has been featured in the bestsellers Hall of Fame at In.com.
This book helps children become financially literate.According to Chabria, one of the best ways to create wealth is start by learning early. He shares the story of how Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Sachin Tendulkar all started early. Yogesh shares the story of a young boy and his adventures in saving, investing and money.
"People who create wealth do things that others don't."
"Stay Foolish and You Will Surely Stay Hungry."
"Sometimes making things simple is much more difficult than keeping things difficult."
"Investing isn't a means of survival - but a means of getting rich!"
"Following the idiot box is a great way to get rich. Of course only idiots would believe that!"
"Knowledge has always been recession proof."
"The best investments are usually the ones the masses don't know about. You see the best investments opportunities are never advertised."
"Women are definitely much smarter than men. Did you ever hear Lehman Sisters going bankrupt?"
"You need to be a risk minimizer to create and preserve wealth."
Chabria's teaching and philosophy has been criticized by traders, who say that by focusing only on simplistic long term investing he ignores and sometimes even belittles short term speculators by comparing them to gamblers in a casino. Chabria responds by saying that as a trader he lost money, went almost bankrupt, had sleepless nights and constantly worried about the stock markets going up and down and is justified in discouraging people from short term trading.
